1. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

In order to stay connected during quarantine, our sisters created a book club! The Handmaid's Tale was a hit. We discussed that while the book technically takes place in a dystopian society, it is easy to imagine it happening in real life and scary to think about. Another topic of conversation was the comparison between the book and the TV show. The ending of this book will leave you wanting more and imagining the different possible scenarios that may play out.

2. Upstairs at the White House: My Life with the First Ladies by J.B. West and Mary Lynn Kotz

“As a political science major, I am of course interested in politics and policy, but this book is great because it gives a unique perspective into the personal lives of not only the former presidents, but also the First Ladies. West shares so many little details that you would never have known otherwise. Sometimes learning about presidents and First Ladies in history books makes them seem so far away, and this book returns some humanness to them.”

-Emily M.

3. Coming Soon: Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer

So many of our sisters are Twilight fans! This spinoff will be told from Edward Cullen’s perspective rather than Bella’s. The book is expected to be released in early August.

“I’m excited for Midnight Sun because it's bringing a new perspective to a story that played a large role in my pre-teens. The Twilight Saga provides an escape into a new reality, something a creative person like me craves. In a strange way, Stephanie Meyer announcing Midnight Sun feels like an old friend announcing they’re coming to visit for the first time in years.” -Leslie M.

4. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins

I grew up reading the Hunger Games series so when I heard Suzanne Collins was releasing a new book, I was excited, yet hesitant. The book is a prequel to the original series and follows a young Coriolanus Snow who is tasked with mentoring the District 12 tribute during the 10th Hunger Games. While I haven’t had a chance to read this yet, it is definitely at the top of my list!

5. Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

Where the Crawdads Sing ended up being one of my favorite books, I honestly could not put it down! It is written so beautifully. You are transported into the book and shown that love has no boundaries.” -Catherine C.

6. Becoming by Michelle Obama

I loved this book because it is split into three parts. Becoming Me, Becoming Us, and Becoming More. I loved that it is not only centered around her life as a First Lady but on her life as a mom, daughter and wife as well. Obama talks about her life growing up and her education/ career path in the first part. In the second part of the book, she describes how her and Barack met and what their life was like before and after the presidency. I found this very interesting because she is able to provide a detailed and personable experience on what is was like and I also learned a lot of neat facts I didn’t know before! In the last part, Becoming More, it is centered around what her and her family are doing now that they do not have every eye in the country fixated on them. Overall, I would highly recommend this book.

7. Girl, Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis

I read this book last year and immediately went to buy the second because I loved it so much. Hollis talks about real issues and real life while providing helpful and healthy ways to get past them. She is funny, entertaining, and most of all, encouraging. Reading her book will motivate you to become your best self, while not beating yourself up in the process.
