What Being in SDT Means to Me

Sigma Delta Tau means more to me than I could ever truly explain. Going through formal

recruitment and becoming a sister of Sigma Delta Tau have proven to be the best decisions I have made so far in college. When I think of what Sigma Delta Tau means to me the first things that come to mind are sisterhood and friendship, philanthropy, leadership opportunities, self-confidence and empowerment, and access to future opportunities.

The sisterhood and friendships I’ve gained in this chapter have impacted my life so greatly. I always know there’s a sister I can turn to if I get the best news of my life or am having

a bad day. There’s always a sister to grab lunch or study with. I cannot count how many times

I’ve had a sister willing to drive me somewhere I need to go or give me a recommendation for

the best hair salon or restaurant in the area. I have learned that sisters are the best people to go to

when scheduling classes or finding out which professor is the best to take. My favorite classes so

far have been classes with sisters. Little did I know my freshman year, I was about to become

best friends with my new sorority family. My best friends and roommate are in the chapter.

When I was having problems in my current dorm freshman year, one of my sisters let me move

into her dorm that she wasn’t sharing currently for the rest of the year. Little did I know, she

would end up becoming my roommate for the next two years and one of my best friends. My big

and little are the most empowering and compassionate people I know. I have made so many

friends in the sorority and they push me to be the best person and student I can be. There is

always someone to lean on and true friends that will always be by your side. I have found so

many lifelong friends in Sigma Delta Tau.

Philanthropy is very important to me and Sigma Delta Tau. Raising money and

volunteering for our philanthropies and the community is very important to SDT, especially

because one of our values is community. We are able to fulfill all our values,

(individuality, connection, engagement, and community), throughout volunteering. We are able to

connect and engage with the surrounding community in ways that we individually choose. There

are many volunteer opportunities we are presented with as a chapter by our community service

chair and we are able to pick and choose what we find the most interesting. There have been

volunteering opportunities working with children and animals, helping our Women’s Center on

Campus, knitting hats for those in need, and many more. Volunteering is very fulfilling

especially when you can strengthen your sisterhood working together. We are also able to work

alongside other sororities and fraternities on campus to raise money for their philanthropies by

participating and donating to their events. This is a great way to bring Greek Life at Kent State

closer and support others in the FSL community.

Sigma Delta Tau has given me many leadership opportunities including my three

semesters on our General Board. I have gained many valuable skills including responsibility and

time management through my leadership positions in the chapter. I have been able to work

alongside the Executive Board and with many other sisters in the positions. I hope to be able to

hold more leadership positions in the chapter throughout my time in college.

Sigma Delta Tau also has improved my self-confidence and made me feel empowered. It has given me the ability to stand in front of over one-hundred girls and talk at chapter or other events. It has given me the confidence to talk to dozens of girls I do not know yet throughout recruitment. I have participated in events that I would have been too shy before joining the sorority. I continue to put myself out there in college and that is because I have gained self-

confidence in the chapter. My chapter loves and supports me no matter how I look or dress. I

know I can be in sweatpants with my hair up, or be dressed up for a formal event, and I will still

feel confident around my sisters. My sisters have improved my confidence and have made me

feel empowered throughout college so far.

I know Sigma Delta Tau will give me future opportunities I would not have necessarily

had if not for being in the sorority in college. Connecting and networking with sisters is very

important and can help you land a future internship or job. As the Alumnae Relations Chair for

the upcoming Fall semester, I have already seen how much alumnae sisters interact with each

other.

Sigma Delta Tau means so much to me and has given me so many opportunities in

college. I have made friendships that I know will last my whole life. I have learned that being in

Sigma Delta Tau doesn’t only last four years, it lasts a lifetime."
